Understandability and Interpretability for Physicians and Nurses

If the understandability and interpretability for patients and the interested public has been endorsed in a previous assessment step, the assessment of the understandability for physicians and nurses can usually be omitted, since it can be presumed to be understandable for them as well.

This indicator also refers to other professionals in the health care system, for example occupational therapists. The target group must be determined in the context of the quality indicator to be evaluated.

In the literature, a distinction is not made between understandability for patients and the interested public on the one hand and physicians and nurses on the other hand. Usually all providers are considered.

Definition
The results of the quality indicator can be understood and interpreted by physicians and nurses.

Core Statement
The following statement is assessed: “The results of the quality indicator can be understood and interpreted by physicians and nurses.”

Information Base for the Assessment
For the assessment of the core statement the available aids to understanding are considered, such as the rationale, explanations to reference ranges and the interpretation aids for the outcomes. Furthermore, inquiries from the target group regarding understandability can be drawn upon.

Assessment Process
After all evaluators have acknowledged and understood the information base, they assess the core statement.

A detailed process description can be found in Appendix 1.
